If I was to write the 10 Commandments of Coronavirus 2020, one of them would be:
Thou shalt not judge what anyone wears during quarantine.
Whether you’ve been wearing the same crew-neck sweatshirt for the past 2 weeks straight, or a wine-stained T shirt you’ve had since college, there is no judgment.
(Unless you’re a psychopath who wears jeans while you Netflix.
Then yes, all the judgment.)
This whole “work from home” era is saving us time planning outfits each week (and doing laundry!), but once the COVID storm passes and the dust settles, you will be craving some fresh tips on how to look trendy at work.
So, I gottchu, girl. Here are some of my DOs and DONTs for workplace fashion:
DON’T be too matchy-matchy!
I love a good matching 2-piece set, but if a large percentage of your closet consists of ‘em, then it’s time to branch out, my dear.
Besides, no one likes that girl in the office who matches all the time.
She’s usually as bland as the kale she eats in the break room every day.
DO mix and match!
Experiment with combining different patterns, as long as they don’t clash too much.
Pinstripe pants with a fun floral top.
A soft polka-dot blouse with a plaid pencil skirt.
The quickest way to look more upscale is with mismatched prints. People assume that you know your fashion.
And another perk? Whenever I wear an outfit that is more on the creative side, I tend to feel more creative in my work. And that’s always a plus!
DON’T neglect your hair and makeup!
A recurring concern of women in the workplace is feeling masculine in certain outfits – like a blazer with dress pants.
A good way to combat this concern is to showcase your femininity in your hair and makeup.
My favorite way to quickly feel more feminine is to tie a pretty scarf in my hair. I ASSURE YOU – it is impossible to feel macho when you’ve got a floral scarf in your ponytail.
A glossy lip with some false lashes is another tried-and-true way to feel girly.
DO incorporate animal prints!
If you don’t feel bold enough to wear a cheetah blouse, then try a cheetah belt.
Or some pointy cheetah pumps.
Or snakeskin booties.
Sometimes, all it takes is a pop of animal print to bring a whole new vibe to an outfit you’ve worn several times. Not to mention, you’ll look and feel more boujee!
DON’T dress too sexy!
Unless you want to be a candidate for “professional hoochie,” avoid short skirts and revealing tops at all costs.
And when it comes to wearing shorts to the office – don’t.
I don’t care if they are a $400 pair of Versace shorts that you just bought at Bloomies and you’re planning on wearing them with tights. Just… don’t.
DO wear jeans (if you can!)
If you’re lucky enough to wear jeans to work, take advantage of that blessing!
My go-to work outfit for when I’m in a hurry is always: a crisp white blouse, a chic black blazer, and my favorite pair of designer denim.
To add sass to this outfit, I pair it with red heels and a nice leather belt. It’s a timeless outfit that I always feel confident in.
DON’T carry a bland handbag!
The quickest way to destroy a stylish outfit is with a ratty purse.
On the flipside, the quickest way to take an outfit from an A+ to a solid A+++ is with a posh handbag.
A woman can make or break an outfit with her handbag, so be smart about your handbag… & wear a smart handbag!
